Huben is a village in the southern part of the East Tyrolean municipality of Matrei, the largest municipality in the Lienz district. Huben is located in the upper Isel Valley, which forms a valley junction with the western Defereggental and the eastern Kalser Tal. The village lies on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria’s largest and oldest national park, encompassing the peaks of the Großvenediger and the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria.

This area of unspoiled nature and human-shaped cultural landscapes boasts an extraordinarily high diversity of plants and animals, as well as natural phenomena found only in the Central Alps. In winter, the snow-covered backdrop of the majestic Großglockner invites skiers to enjoy the slopes of the Kals-Matrei ski area. The valley station in Matrei is about 8 kilometers north of Huben. From the 110 kilometers of slopes, including the freeride area and snow park, visitors enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding peaks of the Hohe Tauern. Huben is also the gateway to the Defereggental, where the altitude guarantees a cross-country skiing paradise with reliable snow. Classic and skating trails wind through this unspoiled valley.

In summer, Huben and its surroundings offer endless opportunities for mountain sports. From gentle alpine hikes for the whole family to high-alpine glacier tours, popular mountain destinations are easily accessible. The large elevation differences of the alpine landscape also make the area ideal for mountain biking. A particularly scenic route is the tour from Huben to Mattersberg.
