Ellmau

At the foot of the steep‑rising cliffs of the Wilder Kaiser stands the village of Ellmau. The village gives its name to the highest peak of the mountain range, Ellmauer Halt, with an elevation of 2,344 meters. The municipality of Ellmau stretches across a broad valley area in the Söllland between the mountains of the Wilder Kaiser to the north and the Hartkaiser to the south. Ellmau is located just under 20 kilometers southeast of the district capital Kufstein.

It is the unmistakable peaks of the Wilder Kaiser that captivate many visitors here. Together with the mountain chain of the more northerly Zahmer Kaiser, the Wilder Kaiser forms the Kaisergebirge Nature Reserve. The community of Ellmau lies within this region and offers an excellent starting point for hikes into its unique flora and fauna. As part of the nature reserve, there is a focus on preserving the landscape, while nearby lift facilities provide access to the surrounding mountains.

In summer, Ellmau and its surroundings become a particularly diverse hiking paradise. Craggy rocks soar above gentle foothills, and scenic, secluded side valleys beckon those who prefer to stay closer to the valley floor. The most important mountain hikes lead into the Kaisergebirge, for example to the Ackerlspitze. Relaxed hiking with panoramic views of the Kaiser is also available to the south of Ellmau in the Hartkaiser area. The Kaisergebirge is a renowned area for sport climbing, with numerous challenging routes and via ferratas. Action can also be found while mountain biking, for example on a tour to the Schleierwasserfall waterfall. Less strenuous, but no less attractive, are the cycling routes through the valley.

In winter, the slopes south of Ellmau transform into part of Austria’s largest connected ski area: the Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental, a ski region of superlatives that has received numerous awards. Skiers and snowboarders won’t be disappointed here, and night skiing is regularly offered. Cross‑country skiers enjoy the Kaiserloipe Ellmau and many further kilometers of groomed trails. Tobogganing by day and night is also available in Ellmau and the surrounding area.

Ellmau is a real insider tip for golfers as well. At the northern edge of the village lies the Golfclub Wilder Kaiser – Ellmau, a 27‑hole course set directly at the foot of the dramatic mountain backdrop. Incidentally, the cast and crew of the TV series Der Bergdoktor also appreciate Ellmau — many filming locations are found in and around the village.
