Mathon

Welcome to the Paznaun Valley! Nestled between the peaks of the Verwall Group to the north and the Samnaun Group to the south lies the village of Mathon. Mathon is located about five kilometers from Ischgl and, although part of its municipality, offers a quieter atmosphere than its glamorous neighbor. It also lies at the foot of the Silvretta Mountains, just a few kilometers from Switzerland.

From autumn to spring, Mathon attracts skiers to the Silvretta Arena, one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. With over 200 kilometers of slopes, there is something for everyone. Modern cable cars carry visitors to high altitudes, ensuring excellent snow reliability. With spectacular fun parks, special slopes, and an 11-kilometer descent, the Silvretta Arena is truly a ski paradise. Access to the ski area is via nearby Ischgl, while beginners can enjoy a family-friendly practice lift directly in Mathon. Similarly, the western neighboring village of Galtür offers a relaxed skiing experience. The Paznaun Valley is also idyllic for cross-country skiing, with trails in Mathon, Ischgl, and Galtür.

During a stay in Mathon, a visit to the Paznaun Farmers’ Museum is highly recommended. Exhibits showcase the challenging life of mountain farmers before the arrival of tourism.

In summer, Mathon transforms into a mountain biking paradise. In one of the largest mountain biking regions in the Alps, no trail is ever ridden twice. A highlight is the annual Ischgl Ironbike race. For a more leisurely pace, scenic hiking routes await. From Mathon, for example, a hike to the idyllic Berglisee or an exploration of the valley toward Galtür is highly rewarding.

For a family day trip, Galtür is perfect. On rare rainy days, the Alpinarium, an interactive museum with striking architecture and changing exhibitions, is ideal. Permanent exhibitions include the myth of avalanches, a climbing wall, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views. Heading west from Mathon, visitors can drive along the Silvretta High Alpine Road, a scenic route connecting Paznaun with Vorarlberg, reaching elevations above 2,000 meters.
